(DailyAnswer.org) – Google has reversed its decision to remove an ad posted online by the presidential campaign of former President Donald Trump that criticized President Joe Biden’s administration.
The ad highlighted Biden’s track record regarding the border crisis and inflation, and was particularly targeting black voters in Georgia’s countryside who have become increasingly disillusioned with Biden judging by recent polls. In the ad a male black voter dismisses a woman working for Biden’s campaign and cites inflation and illegal immigration as two reasons why he supports Trump as a presidential candidate.
In 2019 Google introduced tighter restrictions on how political campaigns can use its tools for advertising. Approaching the 2020 election the Republican National Committee and Trump’s campaign called on Google to reverse the policy that limited the ability of political campaigns to carry out targeted advertising. Following the January 6 Capitol riots, Google banned political ads outright and did not lift the ban until February 2021.
In April 2024 Trump’s campaign used footage of Biden saying he would like to “beat the hell” out of the former president to paint the Democrats as a violent party. The latest advert attacking Biden was taken down by Google for a “policy violation”. Andrew Arenge, who directs election studies and opinion research for the Penn Program, announced on X that the ad had been removed. Arenge added that the Make America Great Again, Inc. Super PAC invested more than $15,000 in targeting specific communities in the area of Macon, Georgia following the ad’s launch on April 25. Following online backlash, Arenge stated that Google had apparently reversed the decision and that the Super PAC’s ads were no longer flagged in the Google ad archive for violating the company’s policies.
In the video, the voter commented that though he voted for Biden in the last election, everything costs more since Biden entered the White House. The campaigner replied that Biden was paying rent for America’s “newcomers”, prompting the voter to say he cannot pay his bills while the White House is prioritizing helping illegal immigrants. The voter concluded that things were better under the Trump administration. Google described the ban as a mistake based on an error of judgment that was quickly overturned following the advertiser’s appeal.
