AOC and Greene in Verbal Battle at Garland Hearing

(DailyAnswer.org) – Republican Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene and Democratic New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez had a heated argument in what was meant to be Attorney General Merrick Garland’s contempt hearing on May 16.

In the hearing held by the Republican-led House Oversight Committee, Garland was held in contempt for not complying with a subpoena demanding he submit an audio recording of President Joe Biden’s interview with a special counsel. The hearing soon descended into chaos and bickering between lawmakers. Less than an hour into the hearing, Greene attacked Democratic Texas Representative Jasmine Crockett’s appearance. When Crockett asked Green if she knew what they were there for, Greene suggested that the Democrat’s false eyelashes prevented her from reading properly.

James Corner, Chairman of the House Oversight Committee, requested order as several in the chamber groaned. Ocasio-Cortez promptly attacked Greene with a point of order, requesting her words be taken down and calling them unacceptable. When she slated the Republican for attacking someone’s appearance in the chamber, Greene asked if her feelings were hurt. Ocasio-Cortez called Greene a “baby girl” and Corner suspended the hearing so that lawmakers could decide on whether to strike Greene’s words. Ocasio-Cortez insisted that Greene’s words could not be allowed.

On the same day, two panels supported holding Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress. Recommendations of the Oversight and House Judiciary Committees followed Garland’s attempt to advise Biden to defy their demands. The allegations relate to the release of audio tapes linked to an investigation into Biden’s handling of classified documents. In March Special Counsel Robert Hur concluded that, despite being a “well-meaning” old man, Biden had issues with memory and “willfully” misplaced the documents. The vote to hold Harland in contempt was very much along partisan lines; the Oversight Committee voted 24-20 and the Judiciary Committee voted 18-15 to support a contempt ruling. The vote outcome now means that Garland will face the contempt resolution in the full House Chamber. The resolution could result in the top prosecutor in the U.S. facing a criminal referral.

Democratic California Representative Adam Schiff criticized the Republican representatives, particularly those who attended former President Donald Trump’s criminal trial in New York. Schiff referenced the alleged hush-money payment made to cover up an affair with adult film actress Stormy Daniels, and claimed that Garland was being punished for refusing to submit video footage for a campaign commercial.
