AOC Moves to Impeach Justices Alito, Thomas

(DailyAnswer.org) – Democratic New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez filed impeachment articles on July 10 against Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito relating to claims of “unchecked corruption”. Ocasio-Cortez highlighted controversy surrounding Thomas’ failure to disclose gifts received from affluent conservatives. She also drew attention to publicity surrounding Alito’s residence and his political views.

Alito refused to recuse himself from former President Donald Trump’s court cases after an upside down US flag was displayed outside his Virginia property. The symbol has become associated with the “Stop the Seal” movement, which alleges that the 2020 election was rigged. The second flag displayed outside his home in Summer 2023 was an Appeal to Heaven flag, which is linked to the Christian Right. Alito blamed the display of the flags on his wife, and claimed it followed a neighborly dispute. The incident raised questions about the judge’s impartiality.

Thomas has also come under fire for refusing to recuse himself in the Trump v the US case regarding the January 6 Capitol riots. The lavish gifts received from wealthy conservatives likewise raised questions about the judge’s ability to vote in Trump’s legal battles without bias. The Supreme Court has been frequently accused of having a right-wing slant, and recently ruled to grant Trump immunity.

Ocasio-Cortez claimed that the corruption crisis at the Supreme Court had spiraled out of control into a fully-blown Constitutional crisis, which she argued threatened American democracy as a whole. The Democrat argued that the two justices’ refusal to recuse themselves threatened the country’s rule of law and the “integrity” of American democracy, and added that the “tool of impeachment” was designed to combat such cases.

Ocasio-Cortez filed a total of five articles of impeachment – two against Alito and three against Thomas. Alito is charged with failing to recuse himself from cases in which he had “personal bias or prejudice” connected to the case. Thomas is charged with failing to recuse himself from cases that are purportedly connected to his wife’s financial and legal interests. Both justices are accused of not disclosing gifts they received.
