(DailyAnswer.org) – A federal judge recently ruled that Virginia must put some non-citizens back on its voter rolls after they were removed under state law. The judge, Patricia Giles, appointed by the Biden-Harris administration, issued the ruling just days before a major election, sparking a significant reaction.
The issue? These non-citizens had self-identified as such, meaning they are not legally allowed to vote. Yet, the judge has ordered that their names be put back on the voter rolls. Virginia’s Governor, Glenn Youngkin, criticized this decision, pointing out that over 1,500 individuals confirmed as non-citizens are now set to appear on the voter lists. “Almost all of them had presented documents proving their non-citizen status, a fact confirmed by federal authorities,” Youngkin stated.
Governor Youngkin emphasized that this situation violates a Virginia law from 2006, which was signed by former Democratic Governor Tim Kaine. This law has consistently required that non-citizens be removed from the voter rolls and includes checks to confirm a person’s citizenship before they are removed. Importantly, the law also allows same-day registration for citizens who want to vote, even if their names were mistakenly removed. For nearly two decades, both Democratic and Republican leaders have enforced this law in every presidential election.
Youngkin confirmed that Virginia will appeal the judge’s order, filing an urgent request with the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, and potentially with the U.S. Supreme Court. The aim is to halt the ruling before Election Day.
Former President Donald Trump also condemned the decision, calling it “a totally unacceptable travesty.” He pointed out that Biden and Harris often accuse him of “weaponizing” the Department of Justice, while claiming that they are the ones using it for political purposes. Trump said, “Now, their weaponized Department of ‘Injustice,’ and a judge appointed by Joe, have ordered Virginia to put non-citizens back on the rolls.” Trump encouraged Virginians to support Youngkin’s fight, and he plans to rally in the state before Election Day.
The ruling has added tension to an already heated election season, with Republicans urging voters to get to the polls early to counter any perceived challenges.
