Biden’s Medicare Cuts: Will Seniors Notice Before Voting?

(DailyAnswer.org) – Despite President Joe Biden’s promises in January that he would not allow Republicans to raise costs and cut social security and Medicare, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Service has under his leadership finalized cuts to the Medicare Advantage program.

The public-private partnership lets providers of health insurance deliver medical coverage that is comprehensive and affordable to American retirees and those with disabilities. By reducing access to MA the president is breaking a central election pledge to never cut benefits for the elderly, a campaign promise Biden has reiterated for three years.

A White House briefing in March attacked Republican plans to raise costs and to target social security and Medicare while lowering taxes for the rich. Biden repeated his promise the same month as former President Donald Trump also spoke of cuts to “entitlements”, vowing to make the wealthy pay their “fair share” and prevent the Republicans from making the cuts to the much-needed services. Republican Florida Senator Rick Scott slammed Biden for allowing the cuts, saying the president has no plan in place to prevent cuts to social security either following the Medicare cuts. He attacked the Democrats for not caring about the 2.8 million seniors enrolled in MA in Florida, and said he would fight “like hell” to reverse the decision. The White House published another statement in May that blamed cuts on Republicans at Congress, and reiterated Biden’s commitment to preventing the cuts.

Democratic Washington Representative Pramila Jayapal recently wrote to Biden calling on him to improve “Traditional Medicare” and redirect money that is going to the MA “incorrectly”. MA plans are favored by millions of Americans over traditional Medicare plans due to them being more efficient and cheaper. Former President Barack Obama introduced the ill-fated Affordable Care Act in 2013 that led to skyrocketing costs leaving many without insurance or doctors. Now Biden has taken a similar approach in cuts to the much-relied on MA while prioritizing traditional Medicare, despite MA performing better than Medicare in all of its 16 clinical measures.
