Biographer: Obama Anxious About Legacy Following Trump’s Win

(DailyAnswer.org) – Barack Obama, it seems, is feeling uneasy about how history will remember him, especially after Donald Trump’s decisive win over Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election. That’s the view of David Garrow, the author of Rising Star: The Making of Barack Obama, who shared his thoughts on the former president’s state of mind.

“He’s deeply worried about his legacy,” Garrow said. “Trump’s return to power is a serious blow to how Obama’s time in office will be viewed.”

For Democrats, Garrow believes the lesson is clear: it’s time to move on from figures like Obama and Hillary Clinton. “They need fresh faces, not just those aligned with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s progressive wing,” he added.

Garrow also criticized Obama and his wife, Michelle, for their approach while campaigning for Harris. According to him, their tone came off as condescending, particularly towards black voters. “People don’t like being lectured, no matter who’s doing the talking,” Garrow told The Daily Mail. “Their speeches were tone-deaf and may have hurt Harris more than helped her.”

Obama, during a campaign stop in Pittsburgh, singled out black men for what he saw as a lack of enthusiasm for Harris’s candidacy. “You’re making excuses,” he said, addressing them directly. “It makes me wonder if the real issue is discomfort with the idea of a woman president.”

Those remarks didn’t sit well with some black men, who found them dismissive. Michelle Obama, too, stirred controversy at a rally in Kalamazoo when she urged men to consider the stakes for women in the election. “Ask yourself what side of history you want to be on,” she said. “Are you ready to tell the women and children you care about that you stood by during an assault on their safety?”

Garrow thinks these comments hurt Harris’s chances. “At the margins, they did more harm than good,” he said.

As for the Obamas’ future, Garrow predicts they’ll spend less time in Washington. “They’ll stick to their celebrity lifestyle and Martha’s Vineyard,” he said, though the shadow of Trump’s win will loom large over their legacy.
