(DailyAnswer.org) – Former President Bill Clinton recently claimed that the tragic death of Laken Riley might not have happened if the Biden-Harris administration had done a better job vetting migrants. His comment connects Vice President Kamala Harris even more closely to the administration’s controversial border policies.
Since 2021, the Biden-Harris administration has reversed many immigration measures put in place by the Trump administration. One of the most notable changes was getting rid of the “Remain in Mexico” policy. This rule required migrants seeking asylum to wait in Mexico while their cases were being processed. Critics argue that removing this has led to more migrants entering the U.S. unchecked.
Laken Riley, a 22-year-old nursing student from Augusta University, was allegedly killed by an illegal migrant who had been released into the U.S. Clinton, now 78, brought up her death while campaigning for Kamala Harris at a fish fry in Georgia. He mentioned how an ad was made about Riley’s case, pointing out that her killer had crossed the border illegally. “If they’d all been properly vetted, that probably wouldn’t have happened,” he said.
Clinton’s remarks come amid growing criticism of the Biden-Harris administration’s handling of the southern border. Under their watch, nearly two million known “gotaways” — migrants who have evaded U.S. Border Patrol — have entered the country. This figure was shared by Republicans on the House Committee on Homeland Security earlier this year.
The administration has also allowed many criminal migrants to stay in the U.S. Republican lawmakers claim that these numbers include over 13,000 convicted murderers and more than 222,000 migrants facing various criminal charges. Critics argue that policies like these put American lives at risk, just as they believe happened in Riley’s case.
According to Pew Research Center, the number of illegal migrants living in the U.S. was about 11 million in 2022. However, many think this number could be far higher, adding to the growing frustration over the current state of border security.
