(DailyAnswer.org) – An Illinois police chief has stated that criminals in the Chicago area are exploiting the migrant crisis by utilizing illegal immigrants to commit crimes with minimal repercussions. Retired Riverside Police Chief Tom Weitzel said in an interview with Fox News that the migrant crime situation is about to boil over and that some offenders have been arrested 3-5 times before being released to commit more crimes.
Since 2022, 35,000 illegal immigrants have crossed the southern border of Texas before being bussed or flown North to the Democrat-controlled city. Gangs have been sending illegal immigrants to target both suburban malls to rob department stores and neighborhoods to commit burglaries.
In November 2023, in response to internal police warnings, officers from the Chicago Police Department were unsuccessful in searching for members of the El Tren de Aragua prison gang among Venezuelan migrants. They did, however, arrest shoplifting and domestic violence suspects. In July 2023, Interim Police Superintendent Fred Waller said that migrants situated in Chicago’s police stations needed more permanent accommodation.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability was at the time investigating 10th District officers over sexual misconduct allegations, which Mayor Brandon Johnson confirmed were related to a girl who had migrated from the southern border. In September, the agency investigating found no wrongdoing on the part of the officers accused. Waller commented on the living conditions of migrants in Police Districts, many of them children, and that though police staff were ensuring they were fed and hydrated, the city needed a proper solution.
A Macy’s store in Oak Brook, Illinois, was targeted by six shoplifters in two separate incidents in January 2024. Between October 23 and January 13, a total of 47 migrants were arrested in Oak Brook. Oak Brook Police Chief Brian Strockis said that the frequency of the arrests highlights the seriousness of the migrant crisis but that the police department is well-prepared and that there are easier places to commit such offenses than Oak Brook or DuPage County.
