Dem Senator Uses Trump Attack to Push Gun Control

(DailyAnswer.org) – Democratic Tennessee State Senator London Lamar has commented on the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump by arguing for tighter gun control.

After the attempt on his life at the Pennsylvania rally, Trump posted on his Truth Social platform thanking law enforcement and Secret Service agents for their swift response to the shooting. Lamar expressed his regret that an innocent bystander was killed in the attack, and stated his hope that the incident would convince Republicans to get behind stricter laws regarding firearms.

Centrist and left-leaning commentators soon took to social media to criticize the GOP’s stances on gun control and blame lax laws for the shooting on July 13. Some conservative and right-wing commentators, however, suggested leftists would not support stricter gun control if it meant an assassination attempt against Trump could succeed.

A day before the shooting, conservative think tank the Heritage Foundation argued that Pennsylvania’s gun laws are already too strict. The think tank accused the Democrat-led state of being obsessed with punishing legitimate gun owners to the extent that its gun laws serve only to undermine public safety rather than reinforce it.

Though President Joe Biden was quick to denounce violence and call on those on both sides of political debate to “cool it down”, both conservatives and leftists have accused each other of inciting violence in an increasingly partisan political climate. Reporters were able to give 54 examples linking Trump to violence, alleged assaults and threats.

Democratic Denver Representative Steven Woodrow was forced to apologize after he was blasted for his comments about the shooting. Woodrow expressed his surprise at the country showing “sympathy for the Devil” after the attempt on Trump’s life. Other Democrats, who have repeatedly called Trump a threat to Democracy, have been accused of encouraging violence against Trump and Republicans.

Numerous liberal comedians, actors, musicians and comedians have glorified violence against Trump over the years. Some celebrities, such as Johnny Depp, overtly referenced a hypothetical assassination of the former president. Depp apologized and claimed his comment in 2017 was a joke.
