(DailyAnswer.org) – Democratic New York Governor Kathy Hochul is proceeding with her plan to rework the Civil Service Commission so that illegal immigrants are prioritized for state jobs. Hochul approved the plan in late January 2024 to give 4,000 illegal immigrants entry-level state jobs. The plan provides migrants priority and removes multiple requirements for illegal aliens to be eligible for the jobs.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams has been pressing the federal government for months to make it easier for migrants to enter work and has stated that the migrants do want to work but that barriers in place make it difficult despite New York’s sanctuary city status.
Hochul’s plan also called for improvements to mental health treatment and changes to how marijuana is taxed as migration increases the state’s budget to $233 billion. $2.4 billion is committed to handling the migrant crisis and is still significantly less than the $10 billion Adams has estimated it will cost the city in summer 2025. As the crisis mounted, Adams’ position on immigration shifted and became increasingly critical of New York’s sanctuary city laws. Adams is still proud of the way the city has accommodated migrants and is keen to make it easier for them to enter work.
He has, however, attacked the sanctuary city policy for impeding communication and cooperation between local law enforcement and the ICE. The mayor called for the law to be amended so that migrants charged with violent and more serious offenses may be deported more easily. Jessica Ramos, the Democratic chair of the New York State Senate Labor Committee, conflated New York residents with illegal immigrants in her attempts to justify the plan to prioritize migrants. She called for placing higher taxes on the wealthy to help pay for new jobs that need filling and stated that all New Yorkers want and should be able to work.
Hochul echoed Adams’ claims that business owners throughout the city and the state were calling on them to approve illegal immigrants for jobs. Adams sued bus operators in January and claimed that they violated state law by transporting 33,000 migrants from Texas to the city. The mayor has criticized both President Joe Biden for his handling of the crisis and Republican governors for busing migrants up to the designated sanctuary city.
