(DailyAnswer.org) – Pennsylvania Democrats are switching parties at more than twice the rate Republicans are according to the state’s voter registration statistics as of December 2023. The data shows that 35,589 Democrats switched parties to the Republicans in 2023, whereas 15,622 Republicans switched to the Democrats. The shift in popularity in President Biden’s place of birth has been attributed to Biden’s economic policies by Nathan Benefield, senior vice president of Pennsylvania-based think tank the Commonwealth Foundation.
In November 2023 John Kennedy, a political science professor at West Chester University, stressed that a lot could happen in the space of a year and that the issue of abortion would be a key concern for voters in the 2024 election, arguing that Republicans would have to rethink their approach to the controversial issue while Democrats would have to address their message on matters such as immigration, border control and the economy.
The University of Delaware’s chair of the Department of Political Science and International Relations, David Redlawsk, argued that to win in Pennsylvania Biden would have to secure decent numbers in Southeastern Pennsylvania outside of Philadelphia. In December Dasha Burns of NBC News asked Pennsylvania voters what they thought of the Biden administration, and after a muted response was met with complaints about the economy, rising costs and shrinking pensions.
Between January and August 2023 five lawmakers from across the country defected from Democrat to Republican; North Carolina State Representative Tricia Cotham said the modern Democratic Party had become unrecognizable to her after she joined the Republican Party, giving them a two-thirds majority required to overpower a veto by the state’s Democratic governor. West Virginia lawmaker Elliott Pritt said he was prevented from getting anything done by the Democratic Deep State, and Georgia State Representative Mesha Mainor said she switched parties due to the crime crisis and failing education system, and that she felt abandoned and poorly backed by her party in attempting to tackle these issues.
