(DailyAnswer.org) – Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has announced that the state will “not comply” with President Joe Biden’s newly released Title IX regulations that seek to grant gender identity protected status.
The amended regulations will require thousands of the country’s schools to adopt progressive gender ideology. DeSantis shared a video to X in which he vowed that the state would fight back against the latest changes to Title IX, accusing Biden of abusing his constitutional authority and taking power away from parents. The changes to Title IX, which include the protected status for transgender students under the federal law on civil rights, will be rolled out in August.
The Biden administration revealed the changes in April 2024. The alterations also bring back protections for students who survived sexual assault that were reduced under former President Donald Trump’s government. Education Secretary Miguel Cardona released a statement saying that the final alterations will clarify that all students across the country will be safe and have their rights respected.
DeSantis, however, raised the concern that the move puts men in women’s spaces, and declared that the state of Florida will “fight back” against Title IX. The governor stressed that he would not allow Biden to undermine parental rights or force men into female activities. The amended regulations, which schools will be instructed to adopt by the White House, go further than simply reinstating measures intended to protect rape victims by expanding the meaning of sexual discrimination to encompass both gender identity and sexual orientation. The changes could potentially scrap measures supported by Republicans that restrict transgender students from accessing facilities based on their gender identity rather than sex.
The White House has not explicitly addressed Republican bans on biologically male athletes taking part in women’s sports. With the amendments the Democrats have declared that a 1972 law on sexual discrimination also relates to gender identity. Cardona stated to reporters that nobody should be discriminated against because of who they are. The development further highlights concerns among conservatives and moderates that the prioritizing of transgender rights could come at the expense of long-established and legally enshrined women’s rights and safety. In September 2023 hundreds of high school students in Pennsylvania staged a walk-out protest against the board’s decision to allow transgender students to choose which bathroom they use. DeSantis said that Florida would not let the Biden administration get away with imposing the new regulations.
