Eddie Murphy Criticizes David Spade’s Racist Joke from 1995 SNL

(DailyAnswer.org) – Eddie Murphy recalled in a podcast interview published on June 29 that David Spade made a racist joke at his expense in 1995 that he found offensive. The 63-year-old actor and comedian was revisiting “cheap shots” he had been subjected to during his career, particularly in its early years.

Murphy commented that it was a “different world” in the 1980s when racist jokes were more common. The comedian went on to discuss the Saturday Night Live sketch by David Spade, and accused his then co-star, now 59, of mocking his career despite the prominent role that Murphy played in the show’s success.

Murphy is credited with reviving the sketch show after he first appeared on it in 1980 when it was struggling. The actor returned to the show in 2019 for the first time in almost 35 years. When commenting on Spade’s joke, which was featured in the “Hollywood Minute” sketch, Murphy claimed that without him the show would have been taken off the air. He also stressed that the joke must have made it through the usual channels, and that it therefore must have been approved by the show’s producers as well.

In his sketch Spade displayed a picture of Murphy, describing him as a “falling star”, and said to “make a wish”. Spade has already addressed Murphy’s outrage in his 2015 memoir, in which he dismissed the joke as “stupid” and said he understood why Murphy felt personally attacked. Murphy has stated that he is on good terms with both Spade and Lorne Michaels, the show’s creator.

In the memoir Spade recounted getting fellow SNL star Chris Rock to listen in on the phone call when he eventually called Murphy to apologize. According to Spade, when the actor unleashed a foul-mouthed rant in response to the sketch, he realized the backlash was more serious than he had anticipated. Spade has yet to respond to Murphy’s recent comments about the joke.
