(DailyAnswer.org) – Former White House interns from 2022 and 2023 have signed an open letter demanding President Biden support a ceasefire in Gaza. Those signing the letter argued that the president had betrayed his promise to support equality by supporting the Israeli regime and ignored the concerns of young voters who backed him in the 2020 election.
More than 22,000 Palestinians have been killed so far in the war in Gaza, and the United Nations warned that half of the 2.2 million population could starve due to the ongoing conflict in the region. The letter called upon the president to take a stand against “ethnic cleansing” in the region. Top education adviser, Tariq Habash, the education department’s only Palestinian-American political appointee, resigned due to the Biden administration’s response to the conflict, and though Biden has increased his public criticism of Netanyahu and Israel’s global reputation, critics are calling for more action.
The letter highlights declining support for the President among his key target groups approaching the 2024 election, as Black, Hispanic and younger voters continue to abandon the party at the beginning of the election year. Voters under 35 overwhelmingly backed Biden in 2020, yet now Trump is leading among this demographic at 37-33%, despite concerns about republican policies on abortion and climate change among many young voters. The former deputy secretary of health and human services under the George W. Bush administration, Tevi Troy, has commented that he could not imagine such a letter being sent out by interns under previous presidents, including Bush.
When confronted by protesters minutes into a speech in South Carolina on January 9th, 2024, Biden claimed that he was working to significantly reduce Israel’s presence in Gaza as soon as possible. The president has repeatedly declared himself a Zionist, facing backlash over his support for the Israeli regime not only from increasingly disillusioned voters but also from within his party; in 2023 Democratic congresswoman Rashida Tlaib accused the president of supporting the genocide of Palestinians, stating that Americans would not forget this.
