(DailyAnswer.org) – Former President Donald Trump issued a stern warning to John Deere, the American tractor company, about moving its manufacturing operations to Mexico. In June, John Deere, which is based in Illinois, announced plans to lay off around 600 workers and shift the production of some machinery, like skid steer loaders and compact track loaders, to Mexico, according to Fox Business.
Speaking to a group of farmers in Pennsylvania on Monday, Trump vowed to hit the company with heavy tariffs if he wins the upcoming election. He promised to slap a 200% tariff on all John Deere products made in Mexico and sold in the U.S.
“I see John Deere tractors behind me. I know a lot about John Deere, it’s a company I admire,” Trump said. “But they recently announced they’re moving much of their manufacturing to Mexico. I’m letting John Deere know right now, if they do that, they’ll face a 200 percent tariff on everything they try to bring back into the U.S. If I win, John Deere will pay that price” during his speech to farmers in Pennsylvania.
Trump suggested that John Deere hasn’t fully decided to move yet, but he wants them to reconsider. “Maybe they haven’t made the final decision, but I believe they have. They think they’ll save money by making products in Mexico and still sell them here at the same price, all while cutting U.S. jobs,” he added.
This is not the first time Trump has threatened big tariffs. He recently pledged to hit car companies with the same 200% tariff if they produce vehicles outside the U.S. At a rally in Flint, Michigan, he told supporters that more cars need to be made here rather than in Mexico or China.
“They think they can make their cars over there and sell them to us without paying anything. That’s not going to happen. We’ll charge them 200%, and those cars will be unsellable,” Trump said in a campaign event focused on countering economic competition from China and Mexico.
During his presidency, Trump imposed tariffs on many products, especially from China, and most of those tariffs are still in place under President Biden’s administration as reported during the 2024 election cycle.
