(DailyAnswer.org) – A community in South Florida is grieving after a deputy was tragically killed in the line of duty on Sunday afternoon.
Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office Corporal Elio Diaz lost his life during a routine traffic stop, according to Sheriff Bill Prummell, who spoke during a news conference later that evening. The incident happened at a Chevron gas station near the Sunseeker Resort in Charlotte Harbor.
Cpl. Diaz had pulled over a white pickup truck when the situation turned deadly. The suspect, identified as 24-year-old Andrew Mostyn Jr., suddenly pulled out a rifle and shot Diaz. Despite efforts to save him, Diaz passed away at a nearby hospital.
After the shooting, Mostyn fled the scene, sparking a large-scale manhunt. Authorities tracked him down hours later at a Popeyes restaurant on King’s Highway in Punta Gorda. When deputies approached, Mostyn reportedly reached for his rifle again, prompting a deputy to shoot him. Mostyn was flown to a hospital but later died from his injuries.
Sheriff Prummell was visibly emotional as he shared the devastating news. “He was a friend, a family man, and an incredible officer. He loved his kids and his work. He will be deeply missed,” Prummell said, holding back tears.
Cpl. Diaz had served the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office for 11 years, earning the respect of his colleagues and community. State leaders also expressed their sorrow. Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody described the loss as “heartbreaking,” urging prayers for the deputy’s family and coworkers. Senator Rick Scott echoed her sentiments, calling Diaz a hero and offering condolences to his loved ones.
This tragedy casts a shadow over what should be a joyous holiday season. The loss of Cpl. Diaz is a painful reminder of the risks law enforcement officers face daily. While the community mourns, they also honor the memory of a dedicated public servant who gave his life in the line of duty.
As we remember Cpl. Diaz, let’s not forget to support his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time. They’ve lost more than just a deputy; they’ve lost a hero.
