(DailyAnswer.org) – Herschel Walker, former Georgia candidate for U.S. Senate, recently criticized Barack Obama for encouraging black voters to choose candidates based on race. Walker argued that this advice pushes the black community backward, instead of moving toward true equality.
Walker’s remarks came after Obama expressed concerns about the lack of black support for Vice President Kamala Harris in recent polls, particularly among black men. Obama implied that more black voters, especially men, should be supporting Harris, but Walker was having none of it.
“Barack Obama, have you forgotten how hard we fought for the right to vote?” Walker wrote on social media. “Telling us to vote based on color is wrong. Biden and Harris’s bad policies have hurt everyone. We need unity, not division!” Walker ended his message with the hashtag #TogetherWeStand.
Obama’s comments were in response to a Pew Research poll from September 30th, showing that only 84% of black voters were planning to support Kamala Harris in the upcoming election. For comparison, Joe Biden received 92% of the black vote in 2020. The poll also revealed that 13% of black voters are currently backing Donald Trump.
Harris’s falling support among black voters is causing concern among Democrats. Obama brought up these worries during a recent visit to Pennsylvania, a key battleground state. Speaking in Pittsburgh, Obama noted that voter turnout and enthusiasm in black communities hadn’t matched the energy seen during his own campaigns.
Obama went further, directly addressing black men in particular. “I want to talk to the brothers for a moment,” he said. “When you have a choice this clear, you need to support someone who understands your struggles and joys. Kamala Harris grew up like you, went to college like you, and has had to work harder to achieve what she has.”
Despite Obama’s efforts, polls suggest that black voters are increasingly turning away from the Democratic Party. Between 2018 and 2022, the Republican share of the black vote rose from 9% to 13%, signaling a shift that Democrats can no longer ignore.
