Hiker Missing for 10 Days Found Alive in Mountains

(DailyAnswer.org) – A hiker who went missing for over a week in Northern California’s mountains was found yelling for help by passers-by on June 20. The 34-year-old hiker, Lukas McClish, vanished on June 11 in Boulder Creek, according to the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office, before he was found ten days later in Big Basin State Park.

McClish said to reporters that he departed from his house in Boulder Creek with little in the way of supplies, as he believed the hike would only last for three hours. The hiker stated that he left home with little more than his pants, hiking shoes, hat, flashlight and folding scissors. McClish got lost in the Santa Cruz mountains, however, in part due to the recent damage caused to landmarks by wildfires.

The hiker survived by drinking water he collected in his boot. He also consumed wild berries. When McClish did not return home for father’s day he was reported missing by his parents on June 16. Following a search and rescue effort that lasted several days, several witnesses heard the hiker’s calls for help before he was finally discovered with the use of a drone.

Hot summer weather has highlighted the dangers of hiking in remote locations, especially with insufficient supplies. A sixth tourist was reported dead in Greece on June 25 after he fell ill on a hike. A US hiker was reported on June 17 to have died on a hike on the island of Mathraki.

The body of British TV presenter Michael Mosley was discovered on the Greek island of Symi following a lengthy search in June. Mosley reportedly got lost and disoriented in the heat while on the hiking trail. The presenter had left his phone behind, and his body was located in an area where it could not be seen easily when a search party reviewed photos taken of the area.

McClish was, likewise, left unable to communicate with relatives searching for him. He had not informed anyone of his hike because he only planned to be gone for a few hours. The hiker’s relatives were waiting on the edge of the forest where he was found, and he only needed to spend one night in hospital before returning home.
