House GOP to Reverse J6 Subpoenas Before Bannon’s Jail Date

(DailyAnswer.org) – Republican Missouri Representative Eric Burlison, Kentucky Representative Thomas Massie and other House Republicans have co-sponsored a resolution to revoke the January 6 Select Committee’s subpoenas against four Trump advisors. The resolution comes days before Steve Bannon is due to report to jail to start a four-month sentence. If successful in reversing the subpoenas against Bannon, Dan Scavino, Mark Meadows and Peter Navarro, the resolution would also repeal the contempt convictions. Bannon’s sentence is due to begin on July 1.

Burlison said in a press statement that the House’s action in undoing the “illegitimate” J6 committee was long overdue. He called on other House lawmakers to back the resolution, stating it was the “right thing to do”. The subpoenas issued by the committee in 2021 and 2022 found Bannon, Meadows, Navarro and Scavino in contempt of Congress. A hard-right commentator and one-time adviser of former President Donald Trump, Bannon vowed to appeal the conviction after he was ordered to report to prison.

Trump claimed in 2018 that Bannon “lost his mind” after he was fired from his advisory position. His comments followed the publication of a book that painted a picture of division in the Trump administration, and suggested that several of Trump’s closest allies despised the then-president.

In an interview with author Michael Wolff for the book, Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House, Bannon blasted a “treasonous” meeting Trump’s son held with Russians at the Trump tower, and criticized the former president’s decision to fire FBI director James Comey. Comey was investigating claims of Russian election interference in the 2016 election.

The resolution states that the “partisan” Select Committee’s verdict was “predetermined”. It called on the courts to revoke any convictions stemming from the Select Committee’s recommendations. Republican Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, a vocal conservative, was among the resolution’s cosponsors. Greene accused Nancy Pelosi of violating House rules with the committee, and stressed the need to hold the J6 committee responsible for destroying its records.
