(DailyAnswer.org) – Two illegal immigrants who have been charged over the murder of a teenage girl in Houston, Texas, are not currently eligible for the death penalty because of the girl’s age unless results from a sexual assault lab return positive, according to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office. Venezuelan natives Franklin Pena, 26, and Johan Jose, 22, were arrested and charged over the murder of Jocelyn Nungaray, 12, on June 17.
Democratic Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg released details about the girl’s murder, which stated that Jocelyn’s body had been left in a creek close to a bridge. The teenager’s body was naked below the waist, her hands were bound and her backside was covered with cuts. According to an autopsy report, Jocelyn died of strangulation.
The Attorney’s Office stated that the pair lured the girl to the nearby bridge where they grabbed and silenced her so she could not alert potential witnesses. After the murder, the two migrants planned to leave town while using disguises to evade law enforcement.
Nungaray’s funeral was held just hours before the anticipated election debate between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump. Trump blasted the incumbent president over his handling of the southern border crisis, which he called the worst in US history. He accused the Biden administration of opening the country’s doors to convicts, people from mental institutions and terrorists. The former president claimed that the US border had never been stronger than it was under the Trump administration.
Nungaray’s family called for a shutdown of the border following the girl’s murder. Christine Nunez, who is a cousin of Nungaray’s grandmother, said the girl’s death had changed her mind about immigration and that the tragedy raised the need to close borders.
Trump released a statement on Truth Social blaming the girl’s death on “Crooked Joe Biden”. He called Biden a “disgrace” to the nation. One House Democrat told reporters they did not know who the girl was after Democrats were caught on video appearing to downplay the connection between the murder and illegal border crossings.
