(DailyAnswer.org) – Jill Biden enthusiastically announced on Monday that the Pentagon will now spend over $500 million each year on women’s health research. The First Lady shared this news at a Clinton Global Initiative event in New York City, where she spoke alongside Chelsea Clinton and Dr. Valerie Montgomery Rice.
“This is a big deal. And it’s about time,” Biden said. “We’re going to get moving on this.”
According to a statement from the Department of Defense, the funding will support women’s health research through a program known as the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs. This program directs funds toward important biomedical research.
The investment will focus on improving the healthcare of more than 230,000 women currently serving in the military, as well as nearly two million female military retirees. The Department of Defense highlighted that this research is “critical” to meeting the needs of these women, who often face unique health challenges in their service.
Jill Biden added that improving the health of women in the military will benefit all women. “I’m so excited about that,” she said.
Her announcement came just before another major moment at the event—when President Joe Biden was honored with the 2024 Clinton Global Citizen Award. Former President Bill Clinton, who presented the award, praised Biden for both his achievements and how he went about accomplishing them. “He’s provided a playbook for getting things done,” Clinton said.
The ceremony featured a bit of humor, too. As President Biden stood alongside his wife, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and Chelsea Clinton, he joked, “This is what you call being trapped.”
In the end, Jill Biden’s announcement wasn’t just about the money. It was about recognizing the importance of women’s health and making sure the U.S. military takes it seriously—something she clearly felt was long overdue.
