(DailyAnswer.org) – New York Supreme Court Judge Juan Merchan, who is presiding over former President Donald Trump’s Hush Money criminal trial, has decided to let Trump attend his son’s graduation from high school in Florida on May 17.
Merchan commented at the end of April that he saw no issue with the timing of Barron Trump’s graduation. The 2024 presidential candidate had pressed the judge for several weeks to allow him to attend the graduation ceremony, and earlier in April Trump was suggesting that he would be denied permission to skip court to be with his family in Florida.
Before Merchan’s decision, the former president referred to the trial as a “scam”, warning that it did not look as if the judge would let him attend the event. Trump stressed that his son has been a “great student” and that he had been looking forward to enjoying his graduation with both of his parents. It had even been suggested that Trump could face arrest for skipping his trial in Manhattan to attend the important event. Some commentators such as Piers Morgan argued that it would be “political suicide” if the Democrats were to jail Trump for choosing to be with his son on May 17.
Barron, born in 2006 and the former president’s only child with Melania Trump, grew up at Trump Tower in New York and attended the Columbia Grammar and Preparatory School in Manhattan. A child when his father entered the White House in 2016, Barron has been fiercely protected from public eyes by his mother. In 2017 conservative commentators were slated for criticizing the child’s choice of clothes and suggesting that instead of a T-shirt he should be dressing like his father in the White House. Former first daughter Chelsea Clinton jumped to the defense of Barron, stressing that should be allowed a private childhood.
Merchan previously stated that whether Trump could attend the graduation ceremony would depend on what stage they were at in the trial. The judge has also ruled that the former president violated a gag order nine times, and has ordered him to pay $9,000 for breaching the order. After receiving the gag order, Trump said that Merchan had a serious case of “Trump Derangement Syndrome”, calling his rulings against him “illegal” and further attempts to take away his rights. Trump continues to deny the charges brought against him.
