Judge Drops Jan 6 Charges Against Trump After Prosecutor’s Request

(DailyAnswer.org) – A federal judge has officially dropped the charges against President-elect Donald Trump in the high-profile Washington, D.C., case related to the January 6 Capitol breach. The move follows a request made by Special Counsel Jack Smith earlier this week.

Judge Tanya Chutkan, in her ruling, confirmed the government’s request to dismiss the indictment. “The Government has moved to dismiss the Superseding Indictment without prejudice,” she wrote, adding that Trump’s legal team did not oppose the decision. As a result, the court approved the motion.

This decision comes after a series of setbacks for Smith’s investigations. In July, another federal judge, Aileen Cannon, had already dismissed a separate classified documents case against Trump, stating that Smith’s appointment as special counsel was not lawful. Earlier this month, following Trump’s win in the 2024 presidential election, Smith hinted at winding down his cases, though this formal filing only became public on Monday.

Trump had consistently denied all charges in the election interference case, asserting his right to presidential immunity. His argument gained traction when the Supreme Court ruled in his favor, stating he could not be prosecuted for actions taken as part of his official duties as president. However, Smith later attempted to refile charges, but Trump again pleaded not guilty.

The latest dismissal marks a significant shift in Trump’s legal battles, with his attorneys continuing to argue that these cases were politically motivated. Trump’s spokesperson, Steven Cheung, called the dismissal a “major victory for the rule of law” and claimed it was a clear sign that Americans want to move past the political weaponization of the justice system.

As Trump prepares to return to the White House, legal experts suggest that most of the cases against him are likely to fizzle out. Special Counsel Smith, according to reports, plans to step down before Trump’s inauguration.

On Truth Social, Trump celebrated the dismissal, calling the cases “empty and lawless.” He criticized what he described as a waste of taxpayer money, accusing prosecutors of pursuing him unfairly to satisfy political agendas.

With these legal victories, Trump and his team are shifting focus back to his upcoming presidency, promising to unite the nation once again.
