The main issue causing friction is President Biden’s interactions with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a Republican, after two major hurricanes. According to some on Harris’ team, the White House isn’t thinking enough about how these decisions impact the campaign.
The conflict began when Harris tried to get involved in the hurricane relief efforts. She criticized DeSantis, claiming he refused to take her phone call, calling him “irresponsible” and “selfish.” However, DeSantis quickly denied this, saying he never received a call from her and that she wasn’t part of his team’s disaster response.
Meanwhile, Biden’s team posted on social media, saying the president had spoken to DeSantis and Tampa’s mayor to help coordinate the recovery efforts. Biden emphasized that his administration was ready to assist with whatever resources Florida needed.
DeSantis pushed back against Harris’ accusations, stating that she had no real role in disaster relief and had never worked with his administration on such efforts before. He added that she wasn’t even part of the chain of command when it came to handling the hurricane response.
The tension didn’t end there. The day after Biden’s social media post, Harris appeared on the talk show The View while Biden held a press conference. During his speech, Biden praised DeSantis, further contradicting Harris’ earlier statements. Biden told the press that he had spoken to DeSantis and commended the Florida governor for his work, even giving him his personal phone number.
At the same press conference, Biden also undermined Harris’ campaign message of being a fresh face for change. He stressed that Harris had been involved in all his policy decisions, and their staffs worked closely together.
The growing tension comes at a crucial time, with some Democrats urging Biden to step aside and let Harris run for the presidency while keeping the funds Biden has raised for the campaign.
