(DailyAnswer.org) – Top Democrats in Congress are refusing to say if they will certify the 2024 election results if Donald Trump wins. This raises serious questions about their commitment to the democratic process and fairness. House Oversight Committee ranking member, Jamie Raskin, who once served on the January 6 committee, told Axios that he’s unsure if he’ll accept a Trump victory.
Raskin has a history of challenging Trump’s legitimacy. In 2017, he objected to the certification of Trump’s electoral win from the 2016 election. Now, Raskin claims that if Trump’s 2024 win is “free, fair, and honest,” Democrats will accept it. But he’s quick to add, “I definitely don’t assume that.” He insists Democrats don’t engage in election fraud, suggesting that any Trump victory would likely be suspect.
Earlier this year, a video surfaced of Raskin discussing the possibility of Congress rejecting a Trump victory. While it’s unclear if he was serious, the mere suggestion that a lawful win could be overturned hints at deep political divisions.
House Rules Committee member, Jim McGovern, echoed Raskin’s skepticism. He told Axios that Democrats would only certify a Trump win “assuming everything goes the way we expect it to.” Like Raskin, McGovern objected to Trump’s electors in 2017. This pattern of challenging Republican victories stretches back decades.
Vice President Kamala Harris, who criticized Republicans for objecting to Biden’s win in 2020, has yet to say if she would certify a Trump victory. This leaves many wondering if Democrats are truly committed to the same democratic principles they demand of others.
Historically, Democrats have frequently cast doubt on election outcomes. From Al Gore’s loss in 2000 to Hillary Clinton’s defeat in 2016, top Democrats have refused to accept Republican victories without question. In fact, since 1977, every Democratic president has questioned the legitimacy of at least one U.S. election.
This repeated denial of Republican wins stands in sharp contrast to their accusations of “election denial” against the GOP. It appears, when it comes to elections, hypocrisy runs deep in both parties.
