States like South Dakota often lose out because migration policies funnel workers and investments toward coastal states, leaving smaller regions struggling. If confirmed, Noem will oversee one of the government’s largest departments, managing a $62 billion discretionary budget and an additional $23 billion for disaster relief. While Noem has demonstrated strong executive leadership as governor, the DHS role presents significant challenges. She will need to navigate the department’s many divisions, complex laws, and intricate bureaucratic frameworks. Noem’s decision to send South Dakota National Guard troops to the southern border in 2024 underscored her dedication to border security. “The border is a warzone, so we’re sending soldiers,” she stated at the time.
