(DailyAnswer.org) – A poll has indicated that 57% of Democrats will not support validating the 2024 election result if former president Donald Trump wins.
The poll by Rasmussen Reports asked 912 likely voters from March 5 – 7 if they supported the Democrats refusing to certify a Trump victory. Almost two-thirds of liberals polled said they would oppose certification. However, only 35% of all voters said they would oppose validating a Trump victory, and 55% said they would oppose attempts by lawmakers to refuse to validate it.
Republicans who objected to the 2020 presidential election results include former presidential candidate and Texas senator Ted Cruz, as well as Trump loyalist and Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene. Democrats in Congress, however, also challenged election results in 2000, 2004, and 2016. Democratic Massachusetts Representative Jim McGovern claimed in 2017 that Trump’s victory was illegitimate due to alleged Russian interference in the election.
A grand jury indicted Trump in August 2023. The four counts are Conspiracy Against Rights, Conspiracy to Obstruct an Official Proceeding, Conspiracy to Defraud the United States, and Attempt to Obstruct an Official Proceeding. If convicted, Trump would not face the death penalty due to the indictment lacking the “special findings” required for such a sentence, but the penalty for the four offenses is up to 55 years in jail. Former presidential candidates Ron DeSantis and Vivek Ramaswamy, who publicly endorsed Trump after dropping out of the race, have suggested that the Democrats cannot win the 2024 election through legitimate means and vowed to challenge any incidence of election fraud on their part.
The Democratic attempts to have Trump removed from the ballot in several states were thrown out by the Supreme Court in March 2024. The verdict was a significant blow to the Democrats’ efforts to disqualify Trump based on claims the former president engaged in insurrection. It is still possible, however, that a Trump victory could result in a constitutional crisis in Congress, forcing Democrats to choose between validating a candidate they consider ineligible for the presidency and denying the will of those who vote for him.
