Man Dies After Falling from Cruise Ship

(DailyAnswer.org) – A passenger aboard a cruise ship went overboard and died on June 6 as the MSC Cruises vessel passed over Norway’s deepest fjord. The passenger, a man in his late 50s, fell from the MSC Euribia into the water at roughly 2 A.M., marking the second time in under three months a passenger has fallen overboard from the Euribia. The vessel was traveling through the Sognefjord, which is referred to as the King of the Fjords.

The man was found in the 4,300-foot-deep fjord’s waters after an hour of searching. He was flown to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead. The circumstances surrounding the death are unknown, and authorities have stated that the death is being treated as “suspicious”.

The incident occurred close to the village of Flam in the southwest of the country after the cruise ship had left Germany on a seven night cruise, according to cruising news reports. The ship was scheduled to dock at Flam on the day of the incident, and after the man fell overboard it stopped slightly over 50 miles west-northwest of the village before turning around. The Euribia managed to stay mostly on schedule despite the tragedy, and was scheduled to return to Kiel, Germany on June 8.

Another passenger, Liam Brody Wilkie Jones, is presumed dead after he disappeared from the Euribia on March 16 while on a seven-day cruise from Hamburg. In February a person went overboard from the MSC Bellissima when traveling from Okinawa to Taiwan, but survived.

The identity of the man retrieved from the fjord has not been revealed to protect his privacy and that of other passengers and relatives. The police officer commenting on the suspicious nature of the incident told reporters that the death could be the result of an accident, an intentional act or a criminal act. The man was reportedly traveling with his wife.

Earlier in June a passenger jumped to his death from the world’s largest cruise ship. The incident happened on Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas. The ship stopped for roughly two hours so the man could be recovered and taken to the Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner’s Office.
