(DailyAnswer.org) – New York City Mayor Eric Adams is considering an 11 PM curfew for illegal immigrants in state-run housing. The Democrat made the announcement after skyrocketing crime and safety issues around migrant centers. Under the proposed measures illegal immigrants will also have to stay in their rooms until 6 AM except in the event of an emergency. Migrant advocates objected to the plans; Queens Borough President Donovan Richards argued that the measures would further prevent migrants from settling into employment and leaving the shelter system, even though the suggested curfew is the same as that already in place at homeless shelters in the city.
The migrant crisis in New York City has reached breaking point; Adams told migrants in August 2023 that the city had no more room, and the following month there were protests as workers got fed up with the escalating situation and the knock-on effect of the Biden administration’s handling of the Southern Border Crisis. The mayor’s popularity has plummeted as a result of the crisis in New York City and suggestions that his policies are coddling illegal immigrants and worsening rather than effectively dealing with the problem. Until December 2023 when Texas announced it would arrest and jail those crossing the border illegally, Republican states were exacerbating the issue in areas such as New York by sending migrants on to Democrat-run cities.
Under the proposed new rules those who commit three offenses within a month may face expulsion unless exceptions can be made due to appointments or work or school obligations during curfew hours. Adams has stated that the policy will be trialed at a small amount of shelters across the city. Local residents reported that illegal immigrants situated nearby at Floyd Bennett Field were going door-to-door begging for food, money and clothing. Though some local residents such as David Fitzgerald, an Irish immigrant, showed sympathy for those staying at the controversial Floyd Bennet Field shelter, several were expressing their unease, having not been used to experiencing begging at their property on a daily basis. After his rating hit a record low in December 2023, Adams continued to praise the city’s role as a “sanctuary city”, but time will tell whether the new rules at shelters improve his ratings in polls.
