Mayorkas Under Fire for Skipping Impeachment Hearing

(DailyAnswer.org) – A mother whose daughter died from a fentanyl overdose has slated Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for failing to show up to an impeachment hearing in January 2024.

Josephine Dunn, whose daughter died aged 26 after taking fentanyl she mistook for oxycodone, flew from Arizona to demand answers, and was not aware of Mayorkas’ absence from the impeachment until she landed. Dunn commented that she was there to meet him on her sister’s birthday, that she did not need to be there, that she could have been at home grieving with her husband, and that she hoped what he was doing instead was more important. When asked by Texas Representative Michael McCaul whether Mayorkas had violated his oath of office by neglecting to secure the southern border, Dunn responded yes, though McCaul noted that Mayorkas was in Mexico meeting with government officials.

Fellow Republican witness Tammy Nobles agreed with Dunn that Mayorkas violated his oath of office and that he should be held personally accountable; Nobles went into graphic detail about her 20-year-old autistic daughter being raped then murdered with a cord, before being left on the floor “like trash” by a known MS-13 gang member who crossed the border illegally. Nobles blamed the Department of Homeland Security for not properly vetting the El Salvador national, noting his gang tattoos or checking with the El Salvador government if he was on the list of known gang members.

After House Homeland Security Committee Chair and Tennessee Republican Mark Green demanded Mayorkas’ public testimony, he ditched plans to include this in the impeachment proceedings, opting to demand a written testimony instead. Mayorkas had expressed a willingness to discuss “possible dates” to testify, but after an initial disagreement with the committee over a rush to impeach, Green instead invited Mayorkas to submit his written testimony by January 18th. Green argued that no American is safe due to the Democrats’ handling of the border crisis and attacked Mayorkas for failing to turn up, arguing that he had neglected his oath of office and displayed egregious misconduct.

President Joe Biden has promised to include the US-Mexico border in a $110 billion package that would also cover Ukraine and Israel conflicts, but Louisiana Representative and Republican Clay Higgins argued that they should be funding military aid in Texas rather than Ukraine. The Republicans are keen to proceed with the impeachment without testimony or witnesses provided by the Democrats.
