(DailyAnswer.org) – After a week of dramatic political shifts, Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) seems to be having a tough time processing the results. Following Donald Trump’s historic election victory, along with Republican wins in both the House and Senate, the longtime California Democrat admitted she’s feeling “terrible.”
When asked by CNN’s Manu Raju how she was doing, Pelosi, now 84, didn’t mince words. “Terrible,” she replied. A journalist recounted this exchange, highlighting Pelosi’s stark reaction.
It’s not hard to see why she might feel that way. Trump’s stunning comeback wasn’t just a win; it was a landslide. He swept all seven swing states, captured the popular vote by nearly seven million, and secured 312 electoral votes. Trump himself seemed jubilant, posting in all caps to celebrate: “THANK YOU GOD! WON ALL SWING STATES, & THE POPULAR VOTE BY ALMOST 7 MILLION VOTERS. GOT 312 ELECTORAL VOTES.”
But Trump’s win wasn’t the only blow to Democrats. Republicans regained control of the Senate, adding several prominent America-first candidates like Bernie Moreno in Ohio to their ranks. And the House? Republicans have now locked in the 218 seats needed for a majority, with some races still undecided. These developments marked a significant setback for Democrats, leaving them reeling.
In reflecting on the losses, Pelosi suggested the results might have turned out differently if her party had handled its primary process better. Instead of allowing a competitive race, Democratic elites essentially handed the nomination to Vice President Kamala Harris after sidelining President Biden.
“And as I say, Kamala may have, I think she would have done well in [a primary] and been stronger going forward. But we don’t know that. That didn’t happen. We live with what happened,” Pelosi said during a recent podcast appearance. She added that Biden’s early endorsement of Harris effectively shut down any chance of a true primary contest.
Interestingly, Pelosi’s current regrets clash with her earlier comments. Back in August, she had described the process as “open,” telling the Wall Street Journal that Harris had simply been politically smart in securing Biden’s support and winning the nomination. Pelosi’s remarks reflect the growing frustration within her party over strategic missteps during the primary process.
For Pelosi, the party’s missteps and the GOP’s sweeping victories have undoubtedly contributed to her gloomy outlook. Whether Democrats can regroup after this defeat remains to be seen.
