(DailyAnswer.org) – Former NBA star Charles Barkley has threatened to punch black supporters of former president Donald Trump. In a segment with CNN’s Gayle King on March 4, Barkley slated Trump’s comments in Columbia, South Carolina, in February that were called racist by critics.
When speaking hours before the primary election, Trump claimed that he was loved more by black people than any other demographic and called it “incredible” that they were walking around with his mugshot on their shirts. Barkley reacted angrily to the comments and said that if he saw a black person walking around with the mugshot on their shirt, he would punch them in the face.
In his controversial speech, Trump suggested that he resonated with black voters because they, like him, had been “discriminated against.” MSNBC host Jonathan Capehart attacked the comments and called them “unbelievably racist.” Capehart drew attention to other comments made by Trump in Columbia that asked for the lights to be turned down and suggested that he could only see the black people in the audience.
President Joe Biden’s black media director, Jasmine Harris, called Trump an “anti-black tyrant” hours before the campaign. Harris slated Trump for a surging unemployment gap for black workers during his presidency, his comments about George Floyd, and comparisons he made between his own trial and being lynched. When grilled later by CNN host Gayle King about his remarks, Barkley called black supporters of Trump “freakin’ idiots.” He stressed that his issue was primarily with Trump’s comments about black people.
In the interview on the King Charles Show, Barkley stressed that he was not going to go around attacking random strangers and that people can vote for who they want to. He called Trump’s comparisons between his struggles and those of black people “asinine.” The NBA star previously attacked conservatives in similarly blunt terms when he defended Bud Light in 2023. Barkley called those boycotting the beer over its partnership with transgender TikTok influencer Dylan Mulvaney “redneck a-holes” and said that he was not worried about being canceled.
