(DailyAnswer.org) – Democrats are seizing the opportunity to cash in on Donald Trump’s victory in Iowa in January 2024. Trump won 51% of the vote in the caucus, prompting two candidates – former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson and Vivek Ramaswamy – to suspend their campaigns. Democrats took the opportunity to suggest in a fundraising email that Trump’s nomination was “inevitable”. In the email sent out, California Governor Gavin Newsom stressed his concerns about a Trump victory, asking for donations as he branded the prospect of Trump returning to the White House “terrifying”.
Leading Democrats were also quick to see the positives and take advantage of the opportunity to highlight Trump as their most likely opposition. President Joe Biden said to followers that it was always going to be a case of them against Trump and MAGA. Kamala Harris was quick to highlight Trump’s stance on abortion and his labeling of the overturning of Roe v Wade as a “miracle”, as Democrats place the abortion issue at the center of their campaign and promise to work on improving abortion rights. Trump has labeled Biden as the “true threat to democracy” having been called the same by the opposition; according to the Guardian’s analysis, Trump’s success in Iowa is proof that his claims about the 2020 election are taken seriously by many voters and that they do not see Biden’s 2020 victory as legitimate.
With Hutchinson and Ramaswamy now out of the race, the Republican primary is down to three candidates – Trump, former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. The following weeks will be crucial in determining the viability of the Haley and DeSantis campaigns. Former Democratic New Orleans mayor Mitch Landrieu referred to the Republican party as “dead” and stated that Trump dominated the MAGA right. Haley has popularity in New Hampshire, where votes will be cast the following week. DeSantis and Haley have been polling better in a hypothetical stand-off with Biden, and the Democrats have been pushing the message that as Biden beat Trump in 2020 he can do so again.
