(DailyAnswer.org) – A District Attorney refused to stop her vehicle in New York when a police officer attempted to pull her over for breaking the speed limit.
Sandra Doorley, District Attorney for Monroe County, who was in the Democratic Party until she switched to the Republicans in 2015, drove back to her home to demand that law enforcement leave her alone. Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul slated Doorley for acting as if she was above the law, trying to use her role in public office to avoid taking responsibility and for poor behavior towards a police officer who was just doing his job.
The attorney received huge backlash after video footage of the incident was released on April 22. Doorley admitted she drove at 55 mph in a 35 mph zone and defended her actions by stating her house was nearby. When the officer told her she was driving at 20mph over the limit, she said she did not care. As the argument got heated the officer told Dooley she was making the situation harder than it needed to be and that he was only trying to do his job. The officer warned her that refusal to stop a vehicle is an arrestable offense.
Dooley swore at the officer and claimed to know the law better than he did. In her comments afterwards, she claimed she was in a bad mood after dealing with murder cases all day. The released bodycam footage shows the argument escalating after Doorley got out of her car at home, and the officer criticizing her for expecting him to not do his job because of her position. She called Police Chief Dennis Kohlmeier and claimed that though she was wrong, it had seemed pointless to stop earlier when she was nearing her house anyway.
Doorley refused to resign over the incident, but issued a written apology after the heated exchange with the officer. She stressed that she had worked hard for 33 years for the safety of Monroe County, and clarified that no one was above the law including her. She stated that she still has work to do, and that though people do not expect perfection from their “leaders”, they do expect accountability for their behavior. Doorley admitted her poor judgment in the confrontation and turned herself in to an attorney grievance committee, which could result in disciplinary action being taken. She entered a guilty plea for speeding.
