(DailyAnswer.org) – An NYPD officer was shot during a traffic stop, reportedly by a man who had previously been arrested 21 times. Jonathan Diller, 31, was fatally wounded in the incident.
The officer approached the vehicle that 34-year-old Guy Rivera was sitting in as a passenger. Rivera allegedly refused to cooperate and leave the vehicle, and when Diller was attempting to remove him from the seat, River shot the officer in the stomach just under his protective vest. Diller left behind a one-year-old son. Rivera was shot by Diller’s partner in the incident and is hospitalized in a stable condition.
The car was illegally parked at a bus stop when Diller approached the vehicle. According to NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny, the perpetrator reached for the gun after it hit the ground. Though he was able to grab the firearm, Diller was still shot.
Former President Donald Trump attended Diller’s wake, but the NYPD sergeants’ union warned Democratic lawmakers to stay away from the funeral due to their commitment to defunding the police. After speaking to the Diller family, Trump said outside the Long Island funeral home that crime must be stopped and that they have to “get back law and order.”
Sergeants Benevolent Association President Vincent Vallelong said in his letter to the union that the police do not want the elected officials present with crocodile tears to take advantage of photo opportunities. He commented on how “infuriating” it was seeing the city politicians who had called for the police to be defunded expressing insincere and politically motivated sympathy on social media after the shooting. Vallelong concluded that their presence was a “distraction” and a “stain” on a hero’s legacy. He credited Diller for making the ultimate sacrifice and praised public servants for carrying on his work despite the negativity from Democratic lawmakers.
Democratic New York City mayor renewed demands that recidivism be addressed. In another move away from party policy, Adams has also called for changes to Sanctuary City laws, which prevent local law enforcement from communicating with the ICE to have violent offenders who entered the country illegally deported. Adams’ administration has highlighted the issues caused by the “revolving door” criminal justice system. Republican Nassau assemblyman Michael Durso blamed Diller’s death on the legislature refusing to ensure that violent criminals are kept in prison.
