(DailyAnswer.org) – New York State troopers have been deployed to Queens to address escalating crime along Roosevelt Avenue, a stretch running through Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s district. This area has become notorious for persistent illegal activities, including prostitution, unlicensed vendors, and theft. Some locals have even remarked that parts of the neighborhood now feel more like a “Third World country” than a New York City borough.
The cleanup initiative, called Operation Restore Roosevelt, spearheaded by Mayor Eric Adams, will last 90 days. This operation seeks to restore order to the district, where one politician observed that “the number of brothels exceeds the number of corner stores.” Roosevelt Avenue, which passes through Elmhurst and Jackson Heights, has become known for sex workers openly soliciting customers at all hours. Many of the individuals involved in this trade are migrants who boldly approach pedestrians, contributing to the street’s troubled reputation.
Adding to the disorder, unlicensed vendors fill the streets, selling everything from prepared meals to secondhand clothing and stolen merchandise. In a recent report, journalists observed more than 25 alleged sex workers congregating along just a few blocks, with some offering services for as little as $60. Despite law enforcement efforts, previously raided brothels often reopen within hours, heightening concerns for parents who are troubled by the proximity of these activities to schools and children’s centers.
During a press conference this week, Adams, accompanied by police officials, introduced the operation, which will involve over 200 officers, including state troopers. He emphasized, “This is not a short-term fix. We will maintain our presence until the situation is resolved.” Local leaders hope the increased law enforcement presence will provide long-overdue relief to residents who have repeatedly asked for intervention.
Hiram Monserrate, a local politician with a history of advocating for stronger law enforcement, welcomed the operation. He warned that the area had transformed into an “urban crime zone” overrun by gangs and human traffickers. According to Monserrate, the deterioration worsened after a reduction in police patrols, and he criticized political figures who support initiatives like police defunding or the decriminalization of prostitution.
Monserrate also called for a reversal of the state’s recent bail reforms, which he argued have exacerbated the problem. He claimed that shoplifters, knowing they won’t be detained for long, continue to steal and sell their goods openly along the same streets. “This cycle,” Monserrate said, “is devastating our community and perpetuating lawlessness.”
Although police have promised further raids in the coming weeks, many residents remain skeptical, having seen brothels shut down only to reopen shortly after. For now, the struggle between law enforcement and organized crime continues to define Roosevelt Avenue.
