(DailyAnswer.org) – A report has claimed that leftist billionaire George Soros is funding anti-Israel protests that have been breaking out at college campuses across the United States.
At least one group funded by Soros is providing thousands of dollars in financial support to radical “fellows” leading the pro-Palestine movements. One protest group is Students for Justice in Palestine, which has helped organize protests at Berkeley, Emory, Harvard, Ohio State University and Yale. The network of groups funding the SJP’s parent organization is ultimately financed by Soros among other investors. Within Our Lifetime and Jewish Voice For Peace along with the SJP also set up the tents at the Columbia University protests on April 17. All three groups ultimately had financial links to Soros, and the JVP also received cash from the Rockefeller Brothers Fund.
Left-leaning commentators argued that the link between the protests and the billionaire’s Open Society Foundations was “obviously contrived” and only based on “vague insinuations” that Soros is to blame for the protests. The findings see Soros, who is Jewish, accused by conservatives of fueling antisemitism at the protests against Israel’s government. The protests at Columbia have triggered so-called “copycat protests” at other universities.
The US Campaign for Palestinian Rights, which is hiring the radical leftists to support the protests, gives up to $3,660 to campus-based fellows and up to $7,800 to community-based fellows in exchange for them spending eight hours a week organizing the anti-Zionist campaigns. Conservatives have accused Soros of funding multiple protests in the past, such as the 2020 riots over the death of George Floyd in police custody.
Skeptics have dismissed the claims that Soros is directly funding the protests on the grounds that Open Society Foundations’ most recent publicly viewable records are from 2022, long before the conflict began in Gaza in October 2023. Leftist commentators noted the irony that the claims about Soros allegedly funding antisemitic protests contradict several right-wing conspiracy theories about Jewish elites that have also named Soros specifically. The Open Society Foundations released a statement stressing that it proudly supports the right to protest peacefully and that it is committed to fighting against both antisemitism and islamophobia.
