Jimmy Chang, a 37-year-old realtor and community leader, lost his life early Sunday morning in Chamblee when his car was struck by another vehicle in a high-speed crash. The driver of the other vehicle, identified as 20-year-old Christian Fernando Irias-Ruiz, reportedly ran a red light at 100 mph, causing a devastating collision.
Authorities say Irias-Ruiz was under the influence of alcohol and is facing multiple charges, including first-degree vehicular homicide, DUI, reckless driving, and driving without a license or insurance. Local reports confirm that Irias-Ruiz is an illegal immigrant from Honduras. He was previously detained by Border Patrol in 2021 but later released. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has now placed a detainer on him in connection with this case.
Jimmy Chang’s family and friends are shattered by the sudden loss. “It’s devastating for all the family right now; we still can’t process that he’s gone,” said Jason Chang, Jimmy’s brother. “He impacted a lot of lives.”
Chang was well-loved in his community and served as the president of the Atlanta chapter of the Asian Real Estate Association of America (AREAA). The organization shared a heartfelt tribute, describing him as a kind, dedicated leader who touched countless lives. “Jimmy’s passing is a profound loss for our community,” the post read.
The crash also injured four others, including Irias-Ruiz, two passengers in his car, and another individual in a third vehicle. Meanwhile, Chang’s loved ones have launched a GoFundMe campaign to honor his memory and help cover funeral expenses.
Jason Chang expressed the family’s hope for justice, though he knows it cannot undo their heartbreak. “It’s not going to bring my brother back, but hopefully justice will be served,” he said.
