Sinking Yacht and Co-defendant’s Death Mark Tragic Week

(DailyAnswer.org) – Just a few days after British entrepreneur Mike Lynch vanished when his giant luxury yacht sank, a co-defendant of Lynch’s in a previous legal battle was hit by a car and died.

On Monday, Aug. 19, a luxury superyacht sank near the Italian coast. Lynch and five other people also went missing, their bodies were discovered two days later.

It was also later reported that a co-defendant of Lynch, 52-year-old Stephen Chamberlain, died on Saturday, Aug. 17, after he “was fatally struck by a car” while he was out for a run in Cambridgeshire. Chamberlain’s attorney, Gary Lincenberg, confirmed the news on Tuesday, Aug. 20, the day after Lynch went missing.

Chamberlain used to work for Autonomy Corp. as the vice president of finance and was also a co-defendant of Lynch in a massive fraud case. He was accused of inflating revenues at Autonomy and lying to regulators, analysts, and auditors. Lynch and Chamberlain were acquitted in June in the multi-billion-dollar case, which was related to Hewlett Packard’s takeover of Autonomy, and now both of them are dead within two days of each other.

Lincenberg called Chamberlain “a courageous man” who had “unparalleled integrity” and that he’s deeply missed. The attorney said that Chamberlain “fought successfully” to clear his name in the aforementioned trial, and that “his good name” would not live on through his family. Through Cambridgeshire Police, Chamberlain’s family released a statement and described the former executive as “much-loved” and an “amazing individual” who wanted to help others.

The driver who killed Chamberlain, a woman aged 49, remained at the scene in Streatham, England, and helped with the investigation.

On Wednesday, Aug. 21, the five bodies were recovered after Lynch’s yacht sank. Three were brought ashore by divers and the other two were recovered from the boat’s wreckage.

Their exact identities were not immediately reported, but the passengers of the boat who went missing included Lynch, his attorney Christopher Morvillo, Jonathan Bloomer of Morgan Stanley International, Lynch’s daughter Hannah, Morvillo’s wife Judy, and Bloomer’s wife Nada. One other man’s body was recovered, a crew member who worked as a chef on the boat. Fifteen other people were rescued and survived, including a baby.
