(DailyAnswer.org) – Wisconsin police have announced that they “neutralized” a teenage gunman before he managed to enter a middle school armed with a rifle.
Law enforcement responded to reports that a shooter was active outside the Mount Horeb Middle School in Dane County at roughly 12:30 P.M. Officials from the school clarified to parents that no students were harmed in the incident and that the gunman did not breach the school entrance. One witness working nearby said she heard gunshots and saw several dozen students fleeing the gunman.
The 14-year-old student was shot and killed by the police on May 1. The gunshots prompted lockdowns at nearby schools that lasted for several hours. State Attorney General Josh Kaul stated that an investigation is ongoing and confirmed that the gunman was a middle school student in the Mount Horeb Area School District.
According to parents, pupils at the school hid in closets and were scared to communicate using cell phones. A class practicing skating were told to flee the school gym on roller skates. The students then ditched the skates nearby and hid in the bathroom of a gas station. Steve Salerno, the Superintendent of the School District, told reporters that the incident could have been a far worse tragedy had they not received security upgrades recently. The gunman used a Ruger .177-caliber pellet rifle. When police officers commanded the teenager to drop his weapon, he did not comply. As the gunman pointed the rifle at the officers, they opened fire, fatally wounding the suspect. Despite efforts to save his life, the shooter died at the scene.
The name of the gunman has not been released. Salerno promised that support would be provided for the community recovering from a “collective crisis”. Classes were canceled the day after the incident. The Wisconsin Department of Justice typically deals with investigations into deaths caused by law enforcement, which are required by state law to be investigated by an outside agency.
