Ratcliffe rose to prominence during Trump’s first impeachment trial in 2019. He defended the president fiercely, calling the impeachment “the weakest in U.S. history” and questioning witnesses during the hearings. Though praised by Trump and his allies, Ratcliffe faced criticism for releasing Russian intelligence in 2020 that contained unverified claims about Democrats.
