(DailyAnswer.org) – A disturbing story has emerged from Georgia involving the family of a teenager charged with a horrific school shooting. The mother of the alleged shooter, 43-year-old Marcee Gray, is now facing her own legal troubles, accused of abusing her elderly mother.
Marcee’s son, Colt Gray, 14, is charged with a deadly shooting at Apalachee High School earlier this month, where he killed two students and two teachers. On top of that tragedy, Marcee has been charged with taping her 73-year-old mother, Deborah Polhamus, to a chair and stealing her phone last November, according to local reports.
The incident happened in Fitzgerald, Georgia, at Deborah’s home. A friend of the family found Deborah after she hadn’t been able to contact her daughter, Annie Brown, who lives in Florida. Annie had asked a friend to check on her mom after several failed attempts to reach her.
According to police, Marcee had wanted to confront her ex-husband, Colin Gray, the father of Colt. When her mother refused to go with her, Marcee allegedly tied her up, stole her phone, and damaged parts of her home. She also reportedly threw her mother against a wall, leaving her with bruises and a cut wrist. Deborah did not press charges initially, saying she didn’t want her daughter to end up with a felony.
Marcee has a criminal record with a history of drug use and property damage. She was arrested in December, released on bond in April, and is now facing multiple charges, including false imprisonment, theft, and abuse of an elderly person.
As for the school shooting, Colt Gray used a semiautomatic AR-15-style rifle, which he managed to sneak into the school. He shot and killed four people and injured others. His father, Colin, is also facing charges for allowing his son access to the weapon.
Both Colt and his father are expected to face more charges as investigations continue. This heartbreaking situation is leaving many asking how it could have been prevented.
