Collins, known for his staunch support of President Trump, stood by him during his first term. He was a vocal ally during the nomination of a Supreme Court justice following the passing of Ruth Bader Ginsburg late in 2020, helping to secure a major conservative victory. “We’ve got to take conservatism seriously because liberals certainly take liberalism seriously,” Collins told Breitbart News during that period. “As conservatives, we sometimes assume everyone will naturally see things our way. But we need to take our message to the people. When we do, I believe they’ll stand with us.”
Collins decided not to seek reelection for his Georgia congressional seat in 2021, signaling a temporary pause from politics but not ruling out a return. “As ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, I fought every day to protect our constitutional rights and freedoms,” Collins said at the time. “When you’re given the honor to serve, it’s your duty to make a real impact on people’s lives. I’m proud to say we did that.”
Though he stepped away from elected office, Collins made it clear that he might return in the future. “This is goodbye for now, but probably not forever,” he added.
As Secretary for Veterans Affairs, Collins is expected to focus on ensuring that veterans and military families receive the support they need. His background as a veteran and chaplain has earned him respect in both military and political circles, making him a significant pick for the role.
