(DailyAnswer.org) – The audience at the UFC 302 on June 1 greeted former President Trump with “thunderous applause” when he arrived at the mixed martial arts event in Newark, New Jersey.
Days after his conviction of 34 felony counts in his hush-money criminal trial, Trump stopped to shake hands with several in the audience and got a round of applause from the crowd before he took his seat with UFC President Dana White. The match at the Prudential Center that Trump attended was between Dustin Poirier and Islam Makhachev.
A number of UFC stars have praised the former president; at UFC 287 in 2023, fighter Jorge Masvidal said he loves Trump in his speech after losing to Gilbert Burns. Masvidal also announced his retirement following the defeat, and called the former president the “greatest” in history.
At UFC 302, Sean Strickland called it a “travesty” that Trump was convicted in his trial, and vowed to donate to the presumptive presidential nominee’s campaign. At the event Strickland beat Paulo Costa, and the former president readily accepted the praise from the fighter known for his controversial views on homosexuality.
Russian fighter Khabib Nurmagomedov said at UFC 302 that he believed Trump would stop the war between Hamas and Israel. Trump replied that he would and vowed to put an end to the conflict that has killed over 35,000 people so far in Gaza, in addition to the 1,200 killed in the October 7 terrorist attack that triggered the conflict.
According to Nurmagomedov’s coach Javier Mendez, the star met with Trump to press him over his concerns, calling for an end to the war and stressing his sympathy for both nations suffering as a result of the conflict. The Russian was widely praised on social media for confronting the former president about the war.
UFC commentator Joe Rogan commented that the round of applause the former president received was “staggering”. After the standing ovation, members of the audience could be heard chanting “F**k Joe Biden”, and pro-Trump chants rang out during the fight.
