(DailyAnswer.org) – Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, now the running mate of Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris, has agreed to debate former President Donald Trump’s running mate Sen. JD Vance.
Walz agreed to the debate on Wednesday, Aug. 14, in a social media post on X. The post came in response to a post by CBS News about potential dates to hold the debates. CBS News announced that both vice-presidential candidates were invited by the network “to participate in a debate in New York City” and that four dates were proposed: Sept. 17, Sept. 24, Oct.1, or Oct. 8. Walz reposted the announcement and wrote, “See you on Oct 1, JD.”
Vance gave his response the same day, but during a Fox News appearance on “The Ingraham Angle,” where he told host Laura Ingraham that he was “certainly going to debate” the Minnesota governor, but that the Trump-Vance campaign only heard about the proposal three hours prior and needed to discuss it to “figure out when” it could happen.
Vance said that he “strongly” suspects it will happen on Oct. 1, but that he did not want to “do one of these fake debates,” meaning one without an audience or normal parameters to facilitate “a good exchange of ideas.” The Republican senator said they have no intention of rushing “into a fake news media garbage debate” and intend to make sure it is “a real debate.” Vance added that the Trump-Vance campaign would “certainly” do “if CBS agrees” to that.
A campaign official from the Harris-Walz campaign confirmed that Walz accepted the invitation from CBS News and that he looks forward to debating Vance “if he shows up.” Since entering the race, the two vice presidential hopefuls have jabbed at one another’s reputations and policy positions, but have not formally engaged one another.
After President Joe Biden’s disastrous debate performance against Trump on June 27, the new Democratic candidates are perhaps feeling some reluctance to take the stage. Granted, Harris and Walz are younger and don’t have the mental acuity issues of Biden, yet they know public and media opinion could turn on a dime, which they witnessed happen to Biden before pushing him out of the race to take his place.
