(DailyAnswer.org) – Nell Smith, a young Canadian singer who worked with the band The Flaming Lips, has tragically died at the age of 17. Her death was confirmed by her family, who shared their heartbreak in a message on social media. In their post, they expressed how devastated they were, describing Nell as a “feisty, talented, unique, and beautiful” daughter.
Nell’s family wrote, “It hurts so much to say that she was cruelly taken from us on Saturday night. We are reeling from this news and don’t know what to do.” They went on to say that while Nell had many more things to give the world, they were grateful for the experiences she had in her short life.
The family ended their statement by asking for privacy, writing, “Hold your kids tight tonight, and please let us work through this in our own time. We will reach out when we need you.”
Although the family has not confirmed the cause of death, Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne tearfully told the crowd at a concert that Nell had died in a car accident. Fans have since expressed their condolences to the family and the band.
Nell had been planning to release her debut solo album in 2025 under the record label Bella Union. Simon Raymonde, the owner of Bella Union, shared a heartfelt tribute, saying everyone was shocked and heartbroken by her sudden passing. He recalled how Nell recorded an album of Nick Cave covers with The Flaming Lips back in 2021, when she was just 15.
Nell’s journey with The Flaming Lips began when she attended one of their concerts in 2018, dressed in a parrot costume. This caught the attention of Coyne, who later became friends with her and encouraged her to learn guitar. Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the collaboration led to their first album together, Where the Viaduct Looms.
While her life was cut short, Nell’s creativity and talent will be remembered by those who knew and loved her.
