Former Astros Prospect, 24, Dies In Dominican Republic Car Crash

(DailyAnswer.org) – Former Houston Astros prospect Ronny Garcia was killed in a crash on April 19 at the age of 24.

Garcia, his father, and a third person were reportedly killed in the crash involving two motorcycles in Samana, the Dominican Republic. The Astros confirmed Garcia’s death in a statement, saying they were deeply saddened by his passing and that their condolences went out to his relatives and friends. The right-handed reliever saw his debut in the minor leagues in 2017. Garcia joined the Dominican Summer League, where he remained until the 2019 season. Because of the cancellation of the minor league season as a result of the pandemic, Garcia did not pitch in 2020, but was called to rookie-ball in Florida and A-ball in Fayetteville, North Carolina. in 2021.

The Houston Astros confirmed the relief pitcher’s passing on X on April 20. In 2023, Garcia reached High-A affiliate Asheville and signed with the independent team, the York Revolution, in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball in February 2024. York Revolution manager Rick Forney said that after he joined the team, he hoped to get him to be more than just a “one-inning guy.”

Forney commented that Garcia had good career numbers and that he was very excited about his future. Fayetteville Woodpeckers stated on X that Garcia always carried a smile around the ballpark and that he was a talented pitcher. He also played for the Asheville Tourists in North Carolina. While with the Tourists, Garcia went 2-2 with a 3.38 earned-run average in 29 appearances. The pitcher struck out 40 hitters in 34.2 innings.

Garcia, a native of Samana, joined the Astros in 2016 when he was 16 in an international signing. He pitched in the Astros’ system in Class A and the Florida Complex League. Forney commented in 2023 that Garcia would be a “young bullpen arm” for the York Revolution team. York Revolution also released a statement on X expressing its condolences to the pitcher’s family, friends, and teammates.
