Democrats Aim To Revoke Trump’s Secret Service Protection If Convicted

(DailyAnswer.org) – Democrats in the House of Representatives have proposed a bill that would strip former President Donald Trump of Secret Service protection if he receives a prison sentence in his New York City criminal trial.

The 2024 presidential candidate is currently facing multiple charges that could land him in jail. Democratic Missouri Representative Bennie Thompson, who chaired the now disbanded January 6 committee at Congress, introduced the legislation. The bill would automatically revoke Secret Service protection for those convicted of a state or federal felony carrying a prison term of at least one year.

Aiming at the former president, Thompson commented that current law unfortunately does not allow Secret Service protection to impact a protectee’s prison sentence, even if they are a former president. He stressed that it was regrettable that a “previously unthought-of” situation could soon become a reality.

Trump’s hush money trial is currently underway in New York, where prosecutors have accused the former president of manipulating the election relating to payments he allegedly made to adult film star Stormy Daniels before allegedly covering them up with falsified business records.

Lawyer Alan Dershowitz claimed that the proposal meant the Democrats wanted the former president to be “killed.” Dershowitz, who was on Trump’s legal team during his impeachment in 2020, said that Trump is clearly a target and that “everybody is in danger,” adding that if the Republican goes to prison, he will need Secret Service protection.

Trump is also facing charges in Georgia for trying to overturn the 2020 election and in Florida for allegedly holding onto classified White House documents. He denies all charges.

Thompson specifically mentioned Trump as someone who could lose his protection privileges if convicted over one or more of his four criminal indictments. Secret Service protection was expanded to major party presidential candidates after the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy in 1968, but his son and Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has not been granted the same protection in his 2024 presidential campaign.
