Democrats On January 6 Committee Express Fears Of Trump Imprisoning Them

(DailyAnswer.org) – Democratic House Representatives who led an investigation into the role of former President Donald Trump in the January 6 Capitol riot have said they are worried about their safety, expressing fears that they could be arrested if Trump re-enters the White House.

Democrats interviewed about their concerns cited a March 18 post by Trump on his Truth Social platform in which the former president said former Wyoming Representative Liz Cheney should be jailed together with the rest of the Unselect Committee. California Representative Adam Schiff, one of seven Democrats on the Committee, said that he and his wife had been discussing worse-case scenarios and that they must consider their personal safety.

In March 2024, Trump adviser Pete Navarro turned himself into a federal prison in Miami, marking the first imprisonment of a senior official from the Trump administration. If convicted in his hush money criminal trial in New York City, Trump could spend one to four years in jail. House Democratic Caucus Chairman and California Representative Pete Aguilar stated that he took the threat of being sent to prison seriously but joked that his family would visit him regardless due to the prison being close to the Capitol.

Another Democratic California Representative on the Committee, Zoe Lofgren, made clear her belief that Trump’s comments were not merely idle threats. Former D.C. Police Officer Michael Fanone, who was hired by CNN as a law enforcement analyst after testifying before the Committee, warned that Trump would “weaponize” the Department of Justice to persecute political opponents. Like Lofgren, he said Trump told the Democrats precisely what he intends to do if he succeeds in the 2024 presidential election.

In November 2023, Trump suggested in an interview that he would use the FBI and Department of Justice to pursue political rivals if re-elected. The Democrats’ claims echo those made by Trump himself about the Biden administration; at a Washington conference hosted by the Faith and Freedom Coalition in June 2023, Trump slated Biden for weaponizing law enforcement to “interfere in our elections.” The Republican has long painted himself as a victim of political persecution carried out by the Biden administration.
